Another good win
We travelled to Bourton Vale on the best day of the year for our second match of the season. The Captain won the toss again and decided to bat.
The usual opening pair of Greenway and Shepherd got the game under way and the first 7 runs were byes.we were 37 for none in the 10th with Shepherd going well when Greenway was harshly given out LBW for 4…………….too high we all thought. Coops in at three never really settled and was not timing the ball but managed to look stylish as ever he Coops was out for 10 bowled and we were 45 –2. Fonters down from the 1sts was looking for runs and he build a faultless innings. Shep was out for 30 and we were 75-3 but only 20 overs had been bowled. Dave Warwick joined Fonters and took the score onto 135 before he was out for 18. Jude went in and out quickly for 3 all of one shot the 1st ball he faced the next one he played across and was LBW. The instruction was for incoming batsmen to play around Fonters and he should bat through. Then a rush of blood after drinks saw Fonters advance down the wicket and he was out for a fine 51. Abs and Brooks added 25 important runs, but we were all out for 182.
This was a score the Captain thought may be difficult to defend.
I don’t know what Chris Greenway had in his sandwiches, or was he still raw from his batting decision but he came out all guns blazing after tea.
Chris bowled with venom taking wickets in his 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th overs blowing away the top four batsmen and returned figures of 13.3.34.4. Bourton Vale were 44-4 at this stage, a rally from the middle order saw Berry and Arthers put on 70 do. Stuart Cooper had replaced Chris he bowled with good rhythm and he chipped in with 2 wickets one the dangerous Berry. Dave Shepherd bowled some enticing slower stuff, which had a charging Arthurs stumped when on 32. When they were out the score was 119-6 but we still had work to do. Chapman bowled a short spell but did not look threatening, but it was the returning Jude who took 2 wickets in two overs that brought us close to victory.
The unsung hero of the day everyones fielding, on a small ground there were lots of runs saved, with people stopping runs in the outfield and keeping pressure on the batsmen. And it was good work that brought us victory.
A ball pushed toward mid wicket, a suicidal run out, Abs reacting quickly run round from behind the stumps, and good reactions from Jude to cover the bowlers wicket saw the pair run out Arthurs Jnr for 10.
A win and 25 points
